Euro Top VS. Pillow Top Mattress: What’s the Difference?

Euro Top VS. Pillow Top Mattress: What’s the Difference?

Oftentimes, mattress shopping can be overwhelming because of the sheer number of mattresses on the market. It’s hard to know which one is best for you in terms of your sleep type, the mattress quality, and your price point.

One of the biggest points of confusion for many consumers is the difference between pillow top and euro top mattresses. They both have very similar names, and structures, so what makes them different?

Structure

Pillow tops and euro tops are very similar in structure in that they both have an extra layer of foam or fibre padding on top of the coil spring base.

The difference between the two, though, is that this extra layer is visible on the pillow top and not on the euro top.

Pillow top beds have a three-inch layer that looks as though it has been placed on the bed—kind of like a pillow. It’s sewn at the bottom to keep it in place.

With euro top mattresses, this extra layer is actually packed into the mattress itself. The sides are sewn to the coil spring base, giving it a flush appearance.

Size

Generally, both mattresses are the same size—they both have a three-inch layer of foam or fibre on top of the spring coil base.

Although they are fairly equal in size, the euro top mattresses might come a little thicker than the pillow tops. This is because the mattresses are packed with more materials and foams than the pillow tops.

Quality and Longevity

The overall quality of euro top mattresses is higher than pillow tops. They usually have stronger and denser fibres and foams that last for a long time.

Because the pillow top mattresses are lower quality, they don’t last as long as the euro tops.

Sleep Style

Most consumers know that its best to buy a mattress that suits your specific sleep type. This means that if you’re a back sleeper, you should choose a supportive mattress, whereas if you’re a side sleeper, you should choose a soft one.

Both euro top and pillow top mattresses have a soft layer to them, making them perfect for side sleepers, but back and stomach sleepers might enjoy pillow top mattresses a little bit more than the other style. This is because pillow tops tend to be firmer than euro tops.

The best way to know which is best for you is to try out some beds in store!
